LISTER ON PUTNEY

Edward Lister is the Leader of Wandsworth Council and a member for Putney's Thamesfield ward.

If you're tired of being woken up at 4.30am by early morning arrivals at Heathrow and you're fearful that a third runway could bring more of the same then it's time to make your voice heard.

Anit-aircraft noise campaigners HACAN will be outside Iceland in Putney High street on Saturday November 8 collecting names for their petition opposing further expansion at Heathrow.

Many people in Putney are still unaware of the threat posed by a third runway. This may be because they believe the flight path would not come in over us. But the real risk is that because the new third runway would be shorter it would take the smaller aircraft - which could mean even more of the bigger and noisier aircraft descending over Putney.

HACAN and Wandsworth Council are old friends - having campaigned together against night flights for many years. The Putney roadshow will run from 11am to 2pm on November 8 and will be the perfect opportunity to find out more about the likely impact for our community of a decision to expand Heathrow.

I was delighted to see the planning committee taking a firm line against stores which blight our High Street with their intimidating roller shutters. These solid metal barriers are not just unsightly they can create a climate of fear. The store, which is opposite St Mary's church must now take their shutters down. If not the council will step in and do it for them - and send them the bill.

Finally I am sure many local residents will have been saddened to learn of the passing last month at the age of 85 of former West Putney councillor Mary Holben.

Everyone knew Mary - whether residents on the Ashburton estate needing help with a housing problem or children and parents at Granard and Paddock schools where she had been a governor for 40 years.

Mary was quite simply a very special Putney person. We will all miss her.
