Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt has been convicted of a speeding offence that took place in Putney last July.

The 49-year-old MP for Portsmouth North admitted to driving her Mini Cooper at 49mph on the A3 near Tibbet’s Corner where the speed limit is 40mph.

She was fined £568 and had to pay an additional sum of over £300 in costs and victim surcharge. She also will have three penalty points added to her licence.

The offence occurred at 9.39am on 4 July in the days immediately before Boris Johnson’s resignation. On 10 July she was launched a failed leadership bid which, early on, she was widely tipped to win.

She was the second government Minister to commit a driving offence in the borough recently. Tom Tugendhat received a six-month bad for using his mobile phone at the wheel of his car in Wandsworth. He also had made a bid to succeed Boris Johnson.

Ms Mordaunt tried again to become leader of the Conservative Party in October but failed to gain enough support to defeat Rishi Sunak.
