LISTER ON PUTNEY

Edward Lister is the Leader of Wandsworth Council and a member for Putney's Thamesfield ward.

New school, new homes and a new-look park in 2003

The year ahead will see landmark events like the 'relaunch' of Battersea Park following its £10m restoration programme and, in September, the opening of the brand new St Cecilia's secondary school in Southfields.

April will mark the start of an ambitious doorstep recycling campaign. Every week, every householder will receive a single sack for all their recyclable waste. The aim is to make Wandsworth the recycling capital of London.

The first of the new 'hidden homes' being built by the council for local people on our housing estates will also come on stream during the year while the new-look Southside shopping centre in Wandsworth will, I am sure, continue to thrive under its bold new direction.

Those of us looking for a decent night's sleep might even dare to hope for a ban on night flights from the European Court - but anyone looking for a quiet spot on the roads would do well to stay away from Ken Livingstone's congestion charge boundary at Vauxhall.

Happy New Year!
