Stephen Smith to perform play he brought to the Edinburgh Festival
October 15, 2025 A one-man play exploring the inner world of Claude Monet will be staged at Putney Arts Theatre on Wednesday 5 November at 11:30am. Titled A Montage of Monet, the 55-minute performance is written by Joan Greening and will be performed by Stephen Smith, following its appearance at the 2025 Edinburgh Festival. Presented by The Arts Society South West London, the production invites audiences into the artist’s studio at Giverny during the later years of his life. The narrative centres on Monet’s struggles with deteriorating eyesight following cataract surgery and the pressure of completing his now-renowned Water Lilies series. Through a blend of live performance, multimedia projection, and sound design, the show reflects on Monet’s artistic techniques, his relationships with fellow Impressionists, and aspects of his personal life. The performance aims to offer insight into the development of the Impressionist movement and the challenges faced by one of its most prominent figures. The event is open to both members and non-members of The Arts Society. Tickets are available via Ticketsource at £15 for adults and £7.50 for students aged up to 25 (plus a 50p booking fee). The venue is located at Putney Arts Theatre, Ravenna Road, SW15 6AW. If you have never attended an Arts Society lecture before you are urged to join and find out about your local Arts Society. Visit the society’s website for further details.
