Roger Butler giving this month’s lecture for The Arts Society South West London
October 3, 2025 The Arts Society South West London is hosting a talk examining the artistic and architectural legacy of Britain’s canal network. The event takes place at 8pm on Monday 13 October, at The Community Church, Werter Road. Speaker Roger Butler, a landscape architect and heritage writer, will explore the distinctive features of the UK’s 2,000-mile canal system—from sweeping aqueducts and historic narrowboats to the decorative traditions known as ‘Roses and Castles’. The talk will also consider the engineering and design elements that have earned canals a place among the country’s most listed structures. Drawing on restoration work and consultancy experience with national heritage bodies, Mr Butler will reflect on how canals have shaped both rural and urban landscapes, and how their visual language continues to resonate today. Admission is free for members of The Arts Society; non-members may attend for £10 on the door. If you have never attended an Arts Society lecture before you are urged to join and find out about your local Arts Society. Visit the society’s website for further details.
