Brahms Requiem and Elegy to Be Performed at All Saints’

All Saints’ Church on Putney Common will host an evening of reflective and expressive music with The 1885 Singers being joined by several professional soloists.
The event on Sunday 29 March at 7.30pm brings together a distinguished group of performers for a programme centred on Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem and Nänie. The concert features soprano Biqing Zhang, baritone Ambrose Connolly, pianists Robert Bridge and Moritz von Freyhold, under the musical direction of Christopher Langworthy. Tickets will be available on the door.
Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem is one of the most personal and human‑centred works in the choral repertoire. Unlike traditional liturgical requiems, it sets German biblical texts chosen by the composer, focusing on comfort for the living rather than prayers for the dead. The music moves between intimacy and grandeur, with moments of quiet consolation alongside powerful choral writing. Nänie, Brahms’ elegy on the transience of life, offers a contrasting but complementary tone: lyrical, dignified and shaped by the composer’s characteristic warmth. Together, the two works create a programme that is contemplative without being sombre, and expressive without excess.

Founded in 1885, the choir has a long tradition of performing major choral works in southwest London. Known for its musical precision and commitment to accessible performance, the ensemble regularly collaborates with experienced soloists and instrumentalists. It is a non-auditioned choir of about 50 voices who enjoy singing from a wide repertoire of secular and sacred choral music.
