What's on in June?

For coverage on the home page of this site and our weekly newsletter which goes to over 3100 local people send us full details of your event.

First priority goes to events which are paying to be listed. Any community based non-profit events will receive prominent coverage subject to the availability of space.

Commercial events can get free coverage but during busy times of the year there is often no available space.

Generally events from outside the area are not listed unless there is a significant connection with Putney or Roehampton.

If you are paying to promote your events in other local media don't expect a significant amount of free coverage on this site. Costs for event promotion start at £30.

If an event at your favourite venue or club doesn't appear on our site just tell the organisers to get in touch with us and it will be added .

Local Authors Illuminate Literary Putney
A Putney Society event – part of the 2009 Wandsworth Arts Festival

The Brewer Building, St Mary’s Church, Putney SW15 1SN
Local authors Nigel Williams (The Wimbledon Poisoner), Judy Allen and Hugh Thompson, and Professor Janet Todd from Cambridge will provide insights into local authors at St Mary’s Church on Putney is renowned for the many literary figures who either resided there or visited. From Samuel Pepys in the 17th century to Edward Gibbon, E M Forster, Arnold Bennett and Laurie Lee as well as poet Gavin Ewart – recently commemorated by the Putney Society with a blue plaque. The stories of these authors and their life in Putney feature in the new edition of ‘A Short History of Putney and Roehampton’ to be published in Autumn 2009 to mark the 50th anniversary of The Putney Society.

1.00-1.45 Nigel Williams will talk about the work of J R Ackerley who lived at the top of Star and Garter Mansions. Mentor to E M Forster and Sassoon, editor of The Listener and author of many novels including My Dog Tulip – a dog that would have shocked us today by his outrageous behaviour.
2.00-2.45 National journalist and long time Putney resident Hugh Thompson will talk about Swinburne, who lived at the bottom of Putney Hill, and how modern-day Putney would have coped with the poet contemporaries described as “this strange bird of Paradise.”
3.00-3.45 Professor Janet Todd from Lucy Cavendish College Cambridge will talk about Mary Wollstonecraft (author of The Vindication of the Rights of Women – who mysteriously tried to drown by throwing herself off Putney Bridge after being jilted by a lover) and her daughter Mary who married the poet Shelley.
4.00-4.45 local author Judy Allen will read from her work, including Bag and Baggage.
Tickets £4 (non members), £3 (members).
