Improving health and fitness facilities in Battersea Park
Visitors to the gym at Battersea Park’s Millennium Arena will soon be able to enjoy improved health and fitness facilities thanks to an investment of £75,000.
Work is due to begin later this year on extending the arena's fitness centre so that more equipment can be installed and to allow more space for people wishing to exercise with free weights and to carry out stretch and warm up routines.
Other improvements under consideration include the introduction of a cover to the arena's balcony so that athletes who warm up there before using its extensive field and track facilities will be better protected from the elements. The centre also boasts an aerobics studio and sauna.
The latest improvements to the Millennium Arena follow on from a major refurbishment of the running track that is currently underway.
Its eight lane Olympic-standard track is being completely refurbished while the long jump and pole vault facilities also improved as part of a £100,000 investment in the venue.
The latest round of improvements have been part-funded using a grant from the London Marathon Charitable Trust, which has been combined with council money to top £75,000.
The council's spokesman on sports and leisure Cllr Jonathan Cook said: "These are exciting times for the Millennium Arena. It is easily one of London's finest outdoor athletics venues for track and field events.
"Following on from the extensive track and field improvements that have just finished, we will soon begin work on this exciting scheme to enhance the fitness suite.
"We are delighted to be providing such first rate facilities for our residents and are grateful to the LMCT for their support in this endeavour.
"The arena is very well used by schools and local sports and athletics clubs. By continuing to provide and maintain a really top class fitness and athletics venue in Battersea Park we can hopefully encourage more young people to get involved in these sports."
