One Day Left To Request Postal Vote |
|||||
Deadline: 5pm Thursday 14th April
People who would like a postal vote in the forthcoming referendum on changes to the country’s electoral system have just over 24 hours left to submit their application form. Applications for a postal vote must be received in the town hall by 5pm tomorrow - Thursday, April 14. The form can be downloaded electronically from the council’s website at www.wandsworth.gov.uk/vote. Applications received after tomorrow’s deadline will not be accepted. In order to be eligible for a postal vote, people’s names must also be contained in the borough’s electoral register. The deadline for adding a name to the register is midnight tomorrow (Thursday). This deadline applies to all people whose details are not already included on the register and who wish to vote in next month’s referendum. An application form is available at www.wandsworth.gov.uk/vote. People who have changed address recently or did not return their registration form during last autumn’s annual canvass are unlikely to be included on the register. People should not assume that their name appears on the voting list because they are either registered to pay council tax in the borough or possess a Wandsworth Council issued parking permit. People who do take part in the referendum on Thursday, May 5, will be asked whether they favour the existing “first past the post” arrangements or if they would prefer the “alternative vote” system. The actual question that will be put to voters is: “At present, the UK uses the ‘first past the post’ system to elect MPs to the House of Commons. Should the ‘alternative vote’ system be used instead?” People entitled to vote that day are those born in this country, plus Commonwealth citizens and those from British overseas territories. In addition, citizens of Cyprus, Malta and the Republic of Ireland can also cast their ballot. Citizens of other European Union countries are not eligible. For more information about registering and how to access a postal vote, call (020) 8871 6023, email electoral@wandsworth.gov.uk or visit www.wandsworth.gov.uk/vote For more information about the referendum itself, people can read the booklet produced by independent elections watchdog The Electoral Commission, which is being sent to every household in the UK.
