Putney High School is celebrating today after 28 per cent of A Level entries achieved the new A* grade, including seven girls who scooped all A*s.  Three quarters of all results were A or A* grade, with 94 per cent of entries achieving A* - B grades -  a new record for the school.

Of the 88 girls who sat A Levels at Putney this summer, 47 achieved at least one A*. Three students, all 18, achieved the new grade in all four of their subjects. Melanie Jensen is now poised to read medicine at Peterhouse College, Cambridge. Laura Glover will be studying Natural Sciences at Durham while former Deputy Head Girl Margery Infield is taking a gap year before continuing her university studies.

This outstanding success at A* comes after research by the Independent Schools Council predicted that on average, independent schools would achieve A* grades in 16.5 per cent of entries.

Six Putney students will now be taking up places at either Oxford or Cambridge universities, including Ilana Goodman, 18, who is studying geography at Cambridge after achieving three straight A*s. Also celebrating is Sabine van der Linden, 18, who has secured a place at Yale University, USA, where she will be studying Liberal Arts as well as pursuing her passion for lacrosse, having already been selected for the Dutch National Senior World Cup lacrosse team.

And also heading overseas is Alessandra Nilsson-Ladner, 18, who is off to Paris to study Fashion at the prestigious Esmod University after achieving three A*s and one A grade.

Other prestigious universities to attract Putney students include London’s Imperial College, Durham, Exeter, Bristol and Warwick.   Subjects with 100 per cent A* or A grades include Classical Civilisation, Italian, Japanese and PE while History of Art secured 90 per cent; Art, 89 per cent and  Further Maths, 87.5 per cent.

Headmistress, Dr Denise Lodge, said today, “This is a record-breaking year for Putney - testament to the commitment of both staff and students. It is fitting that the school should achieve such results as it embarks on a project to build a state-of-the-art new sixth form centre.”
