The Get to Know Cancer pop-up shop has been officially opened this month by former Tottenham Hotspur and England star Ledley King.

The shop is being run by the council’s public health team, with support from Southside and NHS England. It aims to help spread the message about cancer prevention, and encourage people to get themselves checked out – especially men, who are 37 per cent more likely to die of cancer than women.

Ledley said: “ThecClub has been supporting Get to Know Cancer in raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of cancer and promoting the importance of early diagnosis to Londoners. The campaign has been well received by our fans and local residents, encouraging them to go to their GP as soon as they notice something unusual with their health.

“I’m sure that this new pop-up shop will be just as successful in educating even more Londoners about the different signs of cancer to look out for. Remember, cancer can be ‘treatable, even beatable’ if diagnosed early.”

NHS England estimates that 1,000 lives could be saved in London every year just through early diagnosis of cancer. Its Get to Know Cancer campaign aims to raise awareness of the early signs and symptoms of cancer in order to help more Londoners get treated earlier and has had the support of Tottenham Hotspur since 2013.

Wandsworth’s director of public health, Houda Al-Sharifi, said: “We’re delighted that Ledley has opened the shop. Cancer can affect people of all ages – including the young and previously fit – and we hope Ledley helps spread the message that it’s important for everyone to learn to spot the signs and get themselves checked out.”

The Get to Know Cancer pop-up shop is in Southside Shopping Centre, opposite TKMaxx. It is open daily from 9am-7pm Monday to Friday, Saturday 9am – 6pm and Sunday 11am – 5pm .
