London Fire Brigade – Community Safety Volunteer

Wandsworth Neighbourhood Watch works very closely with the London Fire Brigade.  The borough has been chosen as part of an exciting pilot scheme to trial out a new volunteer’s role within the Brigade.

What is a Community Safety Volunteer?

The role will focus around visiting residents who have experienced a fire within their home and supporting them.  This will be through a visit to talk to them, reassure them and guide them through the next steps.

Will I be expected to help ‘clear up’ after the fire?

No.  You will not be involved in any Fire Fighting duties.

Will I receive any training?

Yes.  You will receive full training for the role from the London Fire Brigade.  You will also be covered under their insurance whilst on volunteering duty and receive ‘out of pocket’ expenses only.

What skills or qualifications do I need?

You do not need any formal qualifications to take part in this scheme.  However you should be confident talking to strangers and happy to visit people within their own homes.  You will also require a CRB check which the London Fire Brigade will obtain.

How often will I be called upon?

Thankfully the frequency of domestic fires within the borough is low so you will not be called upon on a very frequent basis.  The scheme will currently be running Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm.  If you work during these hours some employers will allow time for employees to take part in volunteering schemes such as this.
