Local rabbis celebrate the fixing of the mezuzot

Friday 16th October marked exactly two years since Mosaic Jewish Primary School's first Kabalat Shabbat (welcoming the sabbath) as South London's first and only Jewish primary school. What an amazing two years it has been.

In the two years the school has grown to four classes spanning Reception to Year Two, been rated Outstanding by Ofsted and this month moved into its new permanent home in Roehampton. To mark these significant milestones MJPS again welcomed a cross communal group of local rabbis and synagogue representatives and on Friday 16th October celebrated the fixing of mezuzot* to the exterior doors of the new school building.

Rabbis from across the South London communities were allocated door posts and an excited and well-informed group of children so that each mezuzah could be fixed in exactly the correct position. It was a meaningful, unforgettable occasion followed by Kabalat Shabbat in the new school hall. Rabbis, children, parents, governors and even the chef from the new kosher kitchen (meat) joined in enthusiastically.

* A mezuzah (pl mezuzot) is a piece of parchment (often contained in a decorative case) inscribed with specified Hebrew verses from the Torah (the five books of the Hebrew scriptures). A mezuzah is affixed to the doorframe in Jewish homes and buildings.
