Voter registration forms are being sent to all borough households from October 1. You will need to make sure you fill it in and send it back in order to be eligible to vote in the council and European Parliamentary elections on May 22, 2014.

This year's forms are being sent out later than usual, so there is no need to worry if you have not received yours yet.

By law, everyone must complete a voter registration form each year, even if they don't intend to vote. Failure to do so could lead to a fine. Do not assume you are registered because you have voted before, or pay council tax.

Every British, Commonwealth or Republic of Ireland citizen living in the UK is eligible to vote in this country's elections. All other European Union citizens are eligible to vote in European Parliamentary elections and UK local elections.

If your household details have not changed, you can let the council know by using the freephone, online or text (SMS) confirmation facility. You will need your form in front of you to use any of these services. If your details have changed please complete and return the form straight away. Don't forget to sign it.

If you return the form immediately it will prevent a member of staff visiting your household to collect it, saving council tax-payers' money.

Registering to vote does not mean you are automatically put on the council tax list.
