RHN Helps Local Businesses Give Voice to People with Communication Difficulties

Transport for London expected to attend the awareness raising event

Transport for London will join other London businesses at the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability (RHN) this week, Thursday 10 October, to learn how they can make themselves more accessible for people living with communications difficulties.

The Speech and Language Therapy team at the RHN have invited the businesses to the event to learn about the often very simple and low-cost solutions to communication barriers which can prevent people living with speech and language difficulties from taking part in society.

RHN speech and language therapist, Helen Johnson says, “It is crucial for us to share our expertise and raise awareness about communication disability. In society we have come a long way towards improving accessibility for people with physical disabilities but there is almost no provision for those living with communications difficulties. By making a few small and low-cost changes businesses could make a huge difference to the lives of people living with speech and language difficulties.”

Communication difficulties are often caused by brain injury or disease and can manifest in a number of different ways. They can affect someone’s ability to understand speech, process language or form the words and sentences they want to.

The event is taking place at the RHN on Thursday 10 October, from 4.30pm to 6pm.
