£1.2million invested in Ashmead Care Centre upgrade
January 7, 2026 Ashmead Care Centre in Putney is opening its doors to residents, families and local organisations later this month as it unveils a £1.2 million refurbishment designed to enhance wellbeing for those living at the home. The care centre, part of the Maria Mallaband Care Group, will host a community open day on Thursday 23 January from 11am to 3pm, showcasing newly upgraded facilities and offering free treatments in its new wellness suite. Local MP Fleur Anderson is among the guests expected to attend. The five-month refurbishment, completed in December, includes a redesigned reception area with a café and seating space, a new nursing unit and a luxury private dementia unit. Communal areas such as hallways, dining rooms, lounges and outdoor terraces have also been modernised. One of the most significant additions is a new lifestyle suite, featuring a hair salon and a dedicated wellness room where residents can take part in yoga, mindfulness sessions and massage therapies. Visitors on the open day will be able to tour the new facilities, enjoy mini treatments and manicures, and join free wellbeing classes. Home Manager Luminita Cupsa said the project had transformed the environment for both residents and staff. “This refurbishment has been a fantastic opportunity to enhance the environment for everyone who lives and works at Ashmead. The new wellbeing spaces, in particular, will support relaxation and social connection, and we’re delighted to be able to share them with the local community at our open day.”
The event will also mark the launch of a new partnership with Hair Angels, a specialist dementia-friendly hairdressing service. The team will visit Ashmead’s salon twice a week, offering gentle, sensory-aware hairdressing to residents and members of the wider community. Their approach includes calming music, hand massages and techniques designed to support people living with dementia. Following the refurbishment, Ashmead’s lifestyle team will expand its programme of activities, adding complementary therapies, stretching and movement classes as part of the home’s commitment to holistic wellbeing. Ashmead Care Centre provides residential, nursing and dementia care, with a focus on helping residents stay active, fulfilled and connected to their community.
