This month's lecture from The Arts Society South West London
February 7, 2025 The February meeting of The Arts Society South West London will be given by Timothy Walker who since 2014 has been a Senior College Lecturer in Plant Biology at Somerville College, Oxford. His subject for the lecture at 8pm on Monday 10 February at The Community Church, Werter Road, Putney, (SW15 2LL) will be ‘The Healing Power of Plants’. Plants are integral to art, forming an essential element of countless paintings and being the backbone of inspirational garden design over the centuries, but mankind has also exploited the medicinal properties of plants for thousands of years. Yet the role of plants in modern medicine is still considered to be peripheral by many people. This talk attempts to put the record straight and to show that the value of plants is not merely their contribution to art and design but that plant products are used every day by all of us to relieve pain and suffering, to heal wounds and cure diseases. Timothy Walker firmly believes a garden can be said to be a place where nature, art, science, and spirituality meet on even terms. From 1988 to 2014 Timothy Walker was the director of the University of Oxford Botanic Garden. The talk is free for members of the society and non-members asked to make a donation of £10 on entry. If you have never attended an Arts Society lecture before you are urged to join and find out about your local Arts Society. Visit the society’s website for further details.
