Roehampton Torch Parade to Mark White Ribbon Day

Residents of Roehampton are invited to take part in a community torch parade on Tuesday 25 November to mark White Ribbon Day and the start of the global 16 Days of Activism campaign. Organised by the SW15 Women’s Network and supported by Wandsworth Council, the event aims to raise awareness of violence against women and girls and encourage local people—especially men and boys—to speak out against harmful behaviours.

The parade will begin at 6pm at the junction of Danebury Avenue and Roehampton Lane. Participants are encouraged to bring a torch, lantern or mobile phone to light the way as they walk in solidarity with women and girls affected by violence and abuse. The event is part of Wandsworth’s wider commitment as a White Ribbon accredited borough to challenge the attitudes and behaviours that underpin gender-based violence.

This year’s White Ribbon theme, “WE SPEAK UP”, calls on men to challenge everyday sexism—such as catcalling, inappropriate comments, and so-called “harmless” jokes—that contribute to a culture where abuse can thrive. The campaign stresses that silence can be complicit, and that small acts of allyship can help shift social norms.

The statistics underscore the urgency of the message. According to the National Audit Office, more than one in four women in the UK will experience sexual assault or attempted assault in their lifetime. A 2023 report by the Trades Union Congress found that three in five women have faced sexual harassment, bullying or verbal abuse at work, with many experiencing multiple incidents. In schools, 39% of secondary teachers reported witnessing misogynistic behaviour from pupils in the past week alone (BBC, 2025).

The Roehampton torch parade is one of several events taking place across Wandsworth during the 16 Days of Activism, which runs from 25 November to 10 December. The council is also hosting online workshops, awareness sessions and community events to support residents and professionals in recognising and responding to abuse.

The SW15 Women’s Network, which has grown rapidly in recent years, says the parade is an opportunity for the community to come together and show that Roehampton stands against violence and intimidation. The group aims to create a supportive and inclusive environment where women feel safe, valued and empowered.
