The 5th Putney Sea Scouts are offering , not only one of the best spots to watch the University Boat Races, but a barbeque and a chance to win prizes in a raffle.

Its scout hut, which is on the towpath near the starting point at Putney Embankment, gives a clear view of the action while sitting on a chair in the garden.

The barbecue, bar, cake stall and toilets will be on offer between 12pm and 5pm on Saturday 30 March with all welcome.

There will be special live performances by SW15 Music, a group of tutors who offer free music lessons to children in Wandsworth.

Boat Race Day is the most important fundraising event of the year for 5th Putney Sea Scouts, raising funds for essential repairs to the hut. It gives members of the community an opportunity to support local children to lead healthy, adventurous young lives.

Chris Hayes, Scouter-in-Charge, said, “Come rain or shine, our volunteers and young people will be working hard at the Scout Hut on Boat Race Day, flipping burgers, pouring drinks and serving up tasty cakes to members of the public. It’s always a brilliant day and one that’s so important for 5th Putney Sea Scout Group, so please join us and help make this year extra special.”

This year the Scouts, Cubs and Beavers will also be selling raffle tickets throughout the day, with fantastic prizes donated by local businesses including a Fortnum and Mason hamper, West End theatre tickets and a voucher for a local restaurant.

This site remains committed to providing local community news and public interest journalism.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.

We've always done that and won't be changing, in fact we'd like to do more.

However, the readership that these stories generates is often below that needed to cover the cost of producing them. Our financial resources are limited and the local media environment is intensely competitive so there is a constraint on what we can do.

One-off donations are also appreciated. Choose The Amount You Wish To Contribute.

For businesses we offer the chance to be a corporate sponsor of community content on the site. For £30 plus VAT per month you will be the designated sponsor of at least one article a month with your logo appearing if supplied. If there is a specific community group or initiative you'd like to support we can make sure your sponsorship is featured on related content for a one off payment of £50 plus VAT.
