Laura Wade’s take on the unfinished novel The Watsons to be staged
April 21, 2026 Putney Arts Theatre turns its main stage over to literary mischief this April as Laura Wade’s acclaimed play The Watsons brings Jane Austen’s unfinished world back to life. Running from Tuesday 21 to Saturday 25 April, with evening performances at 7.45pm and a Saturday matinee at 3pm, this inventive production promises a collision between Regency manners and 21st-century imagination. At the heart of the story is nineteen-year-old Emma Watson, newly returned to her family after being cast off by her wealthy aunt. With no fortune of her own and few prospects beyond a boorish brother and an even more ghastly sister-in-law, Emma’s future depends on securing a husband — and quickly. A local ball offers hope, with suitors ranging from charming but unreliable Tom Musgrave to the awkwardly affluent Lord Osborne. Austen sets the stage for romance, rivalry and social intrigue… and then stops. The novel was abandoned, leaving Emma’s fate unresolved for more than two centuries. It’s at this point that Wade takes the reins. What begins as a faithful, affectionate adaptation of Austen’s fragment soon swerves into something far more surprising. As the original material runs out, the characters rebel, the Regency world fractures, and the playwright herself becomes part of the drama. Familiar Austen archetypes — the proto-Bennet sisters, the Wickham-like cad, the Darcy-without-the-charm — find themselves grappling with modern ideas, modern frustrations and the unnerving realisation that their author has left them stranded. Wade’s script, first staged in Chichester in 2018 before transferring to the Menier Chocolate Factory, earned widespread praise for its sharp humour and theatrical daring. A planned West End run in 2020 was halted by the pandemic, but the play’s reputation has only grown since. It’s suitable for ages 11 and up, making it an appealing choice for families, literature lovers and anyone who enjoys theatre that plays with form as much as story. The Watsons is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd.
