Chess enthusiasts are preparing for what the organisers claim is thee first ever community chess tournament held in Putney, taking place on Sunday 28 June at Winchester House, Lower Richmond Road.

The event marks a new milestone for the volunteer-run Putney Chess Club, which has grown steadily since its formation and now hopes to bring together players of all ages and abilities for a day of friendly competition.

The tournament will feature 10-minute games in a Swiss-style bracket, ensuring everyone gets multiple rounds of play regardless of experience. Entry costs £20, which includes lunch, coffee and prizes for the top three players. Registration closes at 5pm on Saturday 27 June, with arrivals from 9am and play starting at 9.30am.

Organisers say the event is designed to be inclusive and accessible, with time-control increments available for players with access needs. “We wanted to create something that feels welcoming and fun,” said one of the club’s volunteers. “Chess has such a strong community spirit in Putney, and Winchester House have been incredibly generous in offering their venue.”

The riverside setting of Winchester House provides an atmospheric backdrop for the tournament, with views over the Thames and easy access from Putney Bridge and local bus routes. The club hopes the event will attract not only regular players but also newcomers curious to try their hand at competitive chess.

Putney Chess Club, which meets regularly for casual games and coaching sessions, has seen a surge in interest since lockdown, reflecting a wider revival of chess across London.

Players can register via Eventbrite or email putneychess@gmail.com for more information.
