Wandsworth’s network of Community Spaces has returned for the winter, offering warm, welcoming places for residents to relax, socialise and access support during the colder months. Council buildings and community-run venues across the borough opened their doors at the start of the monthfor drop-in sessions, hot drinks, and friendly company — with most services completely free.

The initiative forms part of the council’s response to winter pressures and the cost-of-living crisis, aiming to ensure that no resident feels isolated or unsupported. Alongside warmth and refreshments, Community Spaces offer activities, advice sessions, and easy access to key council services.

Cabinet Member for Finance Angela Ireland emphasised the social and practical value of the scheme saying, “Community spaces are more than warm spaces for residents to come during the colder months. They’re about staying connected with your community… We know winter can be a challenging time for many, and these hubs offer a vital way for people to come together and support each other.”

Residents who’ve used the hubs in previous years speak highly of their impact. Sandra, from Battersea, said the spaces helped her family feel supported and less isolated: “It’s a reason to come out of the house even when things are hard. The staff are really kind and understanding.”

Warm Spaces in Putney

Putney hosts a mix of council-run and voluntary-sector venues, offering everything from quiet study space to hot drinks, activities and support services.

Putney Library (Disraeli Road) – Open to all

A well-equipped council space providing:

  • Free Wi-Fi and device-charging
  • Study/quiet area
  • Activities and signposting to services
  • Accessible facilities and toilets

Regenerate (Ashburton Community Centre) – For young people

Open weekdays 9.30am–5.30pm, offering:

  • Board games and youth activities
  • Wi-Fi and charging points
  • Baby changing, parking and accessible facilities

Sparkle East Putney (Intergenerational Community Centre) – For older residents

Open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10.30am–2.30pm:

  • Activities and light refreshments
  • A small library corner/book swap

The Yard: South West London Vineyard (Tildesley Road) – Open to all

A highly active community venue with varied weekly outreach, including:

  • Tea and toast drop-ins, job club and housing repairs clinic
  • Wandsworth Foodbank (referral required)
  • Growbaby project for parents of children aged 0–5
  • Newspapers, refreshments, computer access and baby changing

Warm Spaces in Roehampton

Roehampton has one of the borough’s largest clusters of Community Spaces, offering food support, children’s activities, digital advice and social sessions.

Alton Activity Centre (Ellisfield Drive) – Open Wednesdays

Offers:

  • Activities and light refreshments
  • Signposting to services
  • Wheelchair accessibility

Alton Arts Hub (Portswood Place) – Open daily 9am–8pm

A flexible, all-age community space offering:

  • Free hot drinks and light refreshments
  • Activities, outdoor space and charging facilities

Chantelle’s Community Kitchen (Portswood Place) – Tues & Fri

Provides:

  • Free home-cooked meals (eat-in or takeaway)
  • Advice surgeries on the first Tuesday of each month

Estate Art C.I.C (Fontley Way) – Low-cost community space

Offers:

  • Activities, free Wi-Fi, library corner and baby changing
  • Hot catered meals (suggested donation)
  • Support with access to food

Places Leisure – Roehampton Sports & Fitness Centre

Open to all on selected mornings, providing:

  • Light refreshments, Wi-Fi
  • Parking, toilets and baby changing

Power to Connect (Roehampton Library) – Digital support

A Monday drop-in for:

  • Friendly IT advice for laptops, tablets and smartphones

Rackets Cubed Community Box Supermarket (Roehampton Lane) – Low-cost food support

For SW15 residents/school families:

  • £4 social supermarket
  • Community cuppa sessions
  • Solidarity meals on alternate Mondays

Roehampton Family Hub

Council-run services for families and young people, with:

  • Activities, quiet study areas and toilets

Roehampton Library (Danebury Avenue)

Open to all with:

  • Activities and service signposting

Sparkle Roehampton (Holy Trinity Church) – For older residents

Tuesdays 10.30am–2.30pm:

  • Activities, free hot meal, Wi-Fi

SW15 Women’s Network (Alton Activity Centre)

A weekly women’s coffee morning offering:

  • Free hot drinks
  • Advice signposting and light refreshments
