Petition Launched to Rezone Barnes Station
Proposers say measure would reduce pressure on buses to Putney

A call is being made for a rezoning of Barnes station to reduce pressure on public transport in the area.
A petition has been set up asking for it to be moved from Zone 3 to Zone 2/3 bringing it into line with nearby stations like Putney, Kew Gardens and East Putney, all of which sit on the Zone 2/3 boundary.
The rationale is that commuters, particularly from the Roehampton area, are using the overloaded bus service to travel to a Zone 2 station to reduce costs. It is claimed that this has put extra pressure on routes particularly in the morning as the only buses linking Roehampton with rail services that are used are the ones going to Putney station. The petition has gained the support of the Putney Society and, at the time of writing, had over 250 signatures.
The annual cost of a zone 1-2 travelcard is £1,788 against £2,100 for zone 1-3.
There are several precedents for rezoning by TfL to encourage travel from particular stations. In 2016 Stratford was switched from Zone 3 to Zone 2/3 while at the same time Shoreditch High Street was became a Zone 1/2 boundary station having previously been in Zone 1. The same year Willesden Junction and Acton Central were switched from Zone 3 to Zone 2/3.
