The Wandsworth Children's Traffic Club was officially opened at Riverbank Nursery in Putney on Thursday, February 12. The scheme is being led by Wandsworth Primary Care Trust public health department, in partnership with Wandsworth Council and Transport for London.

The event was opened by the Mayor of Wandsworth, Cllr Colin Dawe and the Mayoress and was attended by members of the Wandsworth Health Authority, Transport for London, Wandsworth road safety and the Children's Traffic Club.

The event follows the London-wide launch which took place earlier in the year in a bid to help reduce the numbers of children who get hurt on London roads everyday. The scheme is being extended following the success of children's traffic clubs across England.

Transport for London is committed to reducing the number of children hurt on London's roads by 50% by the year 2010. Over the last three years 1,935 children have been killed or injured in this way. In areas where the Children's Traffic Club has been running overall child casualties have reduced by 12%.

The launch of the new initiative aimed at pre school children means that all nurseries in the borough will receive Children's Traffic Club packs and parents of 3 to 4 year olds can register for membership to the club. Membership is free and the special information packs designed for young people and their parents and carers are filled with fun educational activities, stickers as well as a series of six illustrated books with stories to read and other items all carrying the road safety message.

Road safety officer, Martin Andrews commented:

"Good habits established early last a lifetime and this is another fun and effective way to educate children at a very early age of the importance of road safety. "
