Tony Colman MP for Putney writes

In this week's diary for PutneySW15.com our MP covers Topping-out at Queen Mary's, Orange masts, Wandsworth Citizens Advice plus more......

Topping- Out Ceremony, Queen Mary's Hospital:

I was very pleased to attend the topping out ceremony at Queen Mary's Hospital, Roehampton on 5th July carried out by Minister of State, the Rt Hon John Hutton MP.

When I was first elected in May 1997 the decision to withdraw acute services from Queen Mary's had been taken the previous December, leading to the loss of District General Hospital status. The new Labour Government then decided that a new community hospital should be built. It has been a long haul, but I am delighted that the new hospital is now well under way. Queen Mary's Hospital in this new form will ensure state of the art NHS facilities for all those services at Queen Mary's Hospital that deliver so well for the people of Putney and Roehampton.

I would like to extend my congratulations to all those responsible for ensuring this new hospital has gone ahead. I am particularly pleased that this PFI project is the first where the staff remains employed by the NHS.

Withdrawal of Orange Mobile Telephone Masts Applications:

I am sure many of the visitors to this site are aware of the decision by Orange Mobile Telephone Company to withdraw their planning applications for eight micro mobile telephone masts in the West Hill and Southfields area. I am very pleased that following representations from so many residents in the West Hill and Southfields area and the decision of Wandsworth Planning Department to recommend refusal for seven of the eight masts that the company has agreed to work with the local community. I know that local residents have made a very constructive response to Orange and are willing to work with the company to achieve a solution that works for both sides. I hope that Orange and Wandsworth Planning Department will also fulfil their sides of the bargain - I hope it is possible to find a location for mobile telephone masts in Putney that do not disturb the local community.

Wandsworth Citizens Advice Bureaux
- contact the Bureaux on 020 8682 3766

I had a very useful meeting with Wandsworth Citizens Advice Bureaux last Friday (2 July) which has recently undergone a major reorganisation due to a severe cut in its funding from Wandsworth Council. This funding cut has meant that the Putney Bureau has had to close. Putney constituents can still access the CABx excellent services at Roehampton at these times:

Monday: 10.00am - 12.00pm
Tuesday: 2.00pm - 4.00pm
Wednesday: 10.00am - 12.00pm
Thursday: 2.00pm - 4.00pm
Friday: Closed.

In addition there is a specialist Money Advice Service available by pre-booked appointment from 10.00am - 5.00pm Monday - Friday. There is also a limited telephone service available Tuesday and Thursday 10.00am - 12.30pm and advice can also be accessed by email via their website: www.wandsworthcabx.org.uk

Post Office, Princes Way, Southfields

I am very pleased that Postwatch has agreed to join in my opposition to this proposed closure.

Dover House Estate Residents Association

This is the latest Putney Residents Association now doing very well. Nearly 100 members were at the last meeting last Tuesday. If any group of Putney residents want to connect with an existing association or if there is none start up one, please contact me if you need advice in starting up.

Visit to Putney School of Art

On Wednesday, 7 July, Ivan Lewis, Adult Learning Minister visited and I was very impressed at what he saw. It is a real centre of excellence.
