Tony Colman
MP for Putney writes
However, to date I have tried to address largely non political issues in my writings for this website and will continue to do so - to give the spotlight to issues that often are not aired in more traditional media! This last week was National Childcare Week (14-20 June). There is still not enough childcare provision in Putney, Roehampton and Southfields. A new childcare provision had its open morning last Saturday (Lebanon Road, West Hill); I hope to go to support them in the next few days - my constituent surgery went on from 9am to 12.45pm so I could not make the open day. The Surestart in Roehampton and in Putney is improving provision not just for children but for their parents too: this type of provision needs to be funded by the Council from their reserves for the whole of the constituency! Alzheimer's Awareness Week is 4-10 July. Over 700 people in Putney have Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia - and almost three times that number will be affected by the consequences. Further information is available at info@alzheimers.org.uk and I strongly praise the work of the Alzheimer's Society in ensuring we who do have to cope with the impact of this dreadful disease do not ourselves forget what they go through. I was concerned to hear that the Council had ceased the garden waste collection trials. However, the contract with BIFFA (the Council's waste contractor) does have an option to bring this back. It is worth remembering when you have a look at the manifesto for the local parties for the Wandsworth Council elections in 2005. However, the Council is helping us compost with special reductions on home composting containers (see www.trycomposting.com/wandsworth). We must encourage the Council to persuade us to be greener. The summer show of the Roehampton Garden Society (of which I am proud to be President) was very well attended at St Margaret's Church Hall last weekend. We all want the 'Good life' (perhaps that allusion dates me!)
