Barclays Cycle Hire is expanding to southwest London on Friday 13 December, when over 150 extra docking stations will be available in the new area and across the existing scheme. All extra docking stations are expected to be operational by spring 2014.

The extension to the south west and the introduction of new docking stations within the existing area is expected to deliver an additional 250,000-300,000 Barclays Cycle Hire journeys each month.

Cllr Russell King, Wandsworth Council transport spokesman, said:“After years of campaigning we have just over two weeks left to wait until these popular blue bikes roll into action on the streets of southwest London. If you’re not already a member, now is the time to sign up.

“The scheme will be a valuable addition to our transport network which can help reduce traffic jams and ease overcrowding on our tubes, trains and buses. We see this extension as the first step towards complete borough-wide coverage. The job’s not done until every home is within easy reach of a Boris bike.

“The council is offering free cycling safety training to help more local people gain the skills and confidence they need to try cycle hire. We want as many residents as possible to benefit from this pollution free transport choice which is often the fastest and cheapest option for short journeys across town.”
