The Council approves ammedments to planning application

Revised plans by Hurlingham Preparatory School for a new building in Putney Bridge Road have been approved by councillors on February 12 2004.

This follows the rejection of an earlier proposal which the planning applications committee had described as too overbearing. The new school building at 122-132 Putney Bridge Road will have three storeys and a semi basement for parking. The number of pupils will grow from 170 to 286.

The amended scheme now excludes a rooftop play area which councillors had feared would create a nuisance for neighbouring residents. The flank wall facing 134 Putney Bridge Road has also been set back with a gap of one metre at ground and first floor level.

The second floor has been set back by two metres at this boundary and one metre on its street frontage. At the rear it has been set back by 11.8 metres to address neighbours' concerns.

Proposals to convert and enlarge existing mews buildings at the rear of the site to provide six houses were also approved. One of the dwellings, which would have been formed by an extension to the end unit, will now be set back to reduce its impact on neighbouring properties in Deodar Road.

Planning applications chairman Ravi Govindia said:

"The changes to the main school building will result in a less overbearing and dominant structure. The scrapping of plans for a roof top play area is also welcome and will reduce noise for neighbours.

"Councillors remain concerned at the number of pupils likely to be arriving at the school by car. For these reasons no further increase in pupil numbers will be allowed. The school will also be required to supervise drop-offs in the morning and work with the council to encourage more children to walk to school or use public transport."
