Sixties' singer and actress Lulu made an appearance on Putney High Street last Tuesday morning, to help the local Superdrug store turn the clocks back to 1964.

The health and beauty chain is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and to celebrate, Superdrug has given its very first store, 64 Putney High Street, a vintage makeover echoing its original design. For example, posters in the window reminded customers of products and prices which would have been on the shelves in 1964, including Nivea crème at 4s, Ribena at 3’3p and Sunsilk at 2s.

Lulu too is looking back on a full 50 years in showbusiness since first topping the charts with Shout as a teenager in 1964, the very same year that Superdrug was established.

Speaking at the unveiling of the throwback shop, Lulu said: “When I started out my look was all about lots of eyeliner, big eyelashes and even bigger hair. Today there is so much choice when it comes to hair and makeup, even compared to ten or twenty years ago. That said, the classics still prevail and there are so many names still around that I remember buying as a teenager, such as Rimmel, Pears Soap.

“I’m so pleased to be part of Superdrug’s 50th birthday celebrations; I’m a big fan, and what a fabulous milestone for us to share. I think the beauty world is like the music industry in that it’s constantly changing and evolving in order to keep fans happy, and in my life my love of fabulous hair and makeup has always gone hand in hand with performing.”
