One of three sites in the borough to receive award for first time
July 14, 2026 Putney Lower Common Cemetery has received the prestigious Green Flag Award, marking it out as one of the best-managed green spaces in the country. The cemetery is one of three new additions to Wandsworth’s highest-ever tally of 15 Green Flag sites this year, joining Harroway Gardens and Huguenot Old Burial Ground as first-time winners. The awards, run by Keep Britain Tidy, recognise parks and green spaces that are welcoming, accessible, environmentally sustainable and cherished by their communities. Judges praised its biodiversity value, noting the cemetery’s mix of mature trees, wild planting and carefully managed grounds that support wildlife while preserving the character of the historic burial ground. The award also reflects the council’s wider investment in its green estate. From major destinations like Battersea Park and Tooting Common to smaller neighbourhood spaces, the borough’s parks have been recognised for their quality, accessibility and contribution to health and wellbeing. But the inclusion of Putney Lower Common Cemetery marks a new milestone: the first time a burial ground has met the national benchmark for excellence. Councillor Ethan Brooks, Cabinet Member for Environment, said the recognition speaks to the dedication of staff, volunteers and local communities. “Recognition in these national awards is testament to the quality of our parks and the time, care and attention our teams put into maintaining them, as well as the important role they play in daily life across our borough,” he said. “We’d like to thank the communities, volunteers and staff who help make these green spaces such valued places.” The cemetery’s success sits alongside praise for the other new award-winners. Huguenot Old Burial Ground was commended for its rich biodiversity and heritage features, while Harroway Gardens impressed judges following recent improvements shaped by resident feedback, including enhanced play spaces and accessibility.
