Roehampton Sports and Fitness Centre has reopened its doors with a completely refurbished fitness suite, offering residents on the Alton Estate a more modern place to get active.
The centre’s gym has been fully renewed, with brand-new machines replacing older equipment and a full redecoration. Improvements to air-handling systems mean the environment is more comfortable and better ventilated, addressing one of the most common frustrations raised by regular users.
The overhaul is part of Wandsworth Council’s wider investment in leisure facilities across the borough and sits within the council’s Wandsworth Moves Together strategy, which aims to help residents lead healthier, more active lives by ensuring leisure centres are “welcoming, accessible and fit for the future.”
Councillor Ethan Brooks, Cabinet Member for Environment, said the upgraded Roehampton centre is a clear example of that ambition in action. “We want every resident to have access to high-quality places where they can get active and improve their health and wellbeing,” he said, adding that the new fitness suites “will help more people move more and feel better.”
While Wandle Recreation Centre has also received a major upgrade — including air-powered resistance machines designed for beginners, older residents and those managing long-term health conditions — the Roehampton refurbishment is especially significant for the Alton Estate, where local access to modern health and fitness facilities has long been a priority. The centre now offers a space that feels genuinely renewed rather than lightly refreshed, signalling a commitment to long-term investment in the area.
In partnership with Places Leisure, Wandsworth Council is investing more than £24 million to modernise facilities, improve accessibility and create environments that support wellbeing for residents of all ages.
