Local families are being invited to celebrate the launch of Putney Leisure Centre’s brand-new soft play area for toddlers under five on Friday 5 December, with a morning of festive fun, free activities, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The new facility has been designed to provide a safe, enriching and inclusive environment for young children, encouraging creativity, movement and joy. Featuring sensory stations and imaginative play corners, the space offers toddlers the chance to climb, crawl and explore in a setting tailored to their developmental needs.

The current installation is temporary, with a permanent soft play area planned for summer 2026. Families are being encouraged to share feedback to help shape the final design, ensuring the future facility reflects the needs of local parents and children.

Paul White, Wandsworth’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said, “We’ve listened to residents who asked for more play opportunities in Putney, and this new soft play area is one part of our answer. Play and movement have never been more important for children’s development. We’re proud to deliver this for local families and by offering half-price access for Access for All members, we’re ensuring that play remains open, inclusive, and welcoming to every family.”

The project is part of Wandsworth Council’s £24 million investment in leisure facilities across the borough, aimed at modernising centres, expanding opportunities for physical activity, and ensuring facilities are accessible to all.

This investment supports the council’s Year of Play initiative and the Wandsworth Moves Together strategy, both designed to make it easier for residents to stay active and enjoy the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Recent projects have included upgrades to swimming pools, gym refurbishments, and expanded community sports programmes, reflecting a commitment to improving health and wellbeing for all age groups.

The launch event at Putney Leisure Centre will run from 10am to 12.30pm and includes:

  • Ribbon-cutting ceremony
  • Free soft play sessions (advance booking required)
  • Special guest appearance by Mrs Claus
  • Face painting and festive activities
  • Bouncy castle
  • Colouring competitions
  • Free refreshments

Additional free soft play sessions will run from 12 noon to 6pm, with Access for All members able to enjoy half-price entry.
