Council says new facility will be more comfortable and eco-friendly
April 14, 2025 The pool at Putney Leisure Centre reopened earlier this month after the completion of a programme of improvements. The council says that the changes will enable swimmers to enjoy a more comfortable and eco-friendly experience. The lighting has been upgraded throughout the centre, as well as the air handling system, which should mean better air quality and more consistent temperature control in the pool area. The new systems are more energy-efficient cutting estimated annual emissions from 646 tCO2e to 599 tCO2e which the council says is the equivalent of cancelling 47 flights from London to New York each year, or driving 235,000 miles in a petrol car. Last year the council announced a broader programme to bring the centre up to an ‘acceptable standard with a new play centre plus a revamp of kitchen in Dryburgh Hall, renewal of sports and studio hall flooring and improvements to the accessible toilet/changing as part of a £3.6million investment programme. Judi Gasser, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said, "Improving the lighting and air handling at Putney Leisure Centre not only makes the pool a more pleasant place to swim, but it also reduces our energy consumption and cuts emissions. It’s a great example of how we’re investing in our leisure centres and sports facilities to support healthier lifestyles, while also working towards a more sustainable future for Wandsworth."
