Retailer in Putney Exchange closes after nearly 30 years
February 7, 2025 One of the longest serving shops in Putney town centre has closed blaming the recent budget for the decision. Huttons, in the Exchange Shopping Centre, had been trading in the area for 30 years but it said recently announced changes ‘made it unsustainable for us to continue in the current retail environment.’ The shop was set up in 1996 when Mark Hutton returned from travelling in Mexico in search of unusual homeware. He opened his first store selling ceramics and furniture acquired on his trip complimented with Colombian pottery. Since then the product range was broadened to include cards, candle and clothing. In a statement the company said, “We want to express our deepest gratitude to all our amazing Putney customers. Thank you for your unwavering support, loyalty, and kindness over the years you will truly be missed! “A heartfelt thank you also goes to the many brilliant people who have worked with us in Putney. Your contributions have been invaluable, and we hope you are all happy and thriving. “We would also like to extend our gratitude to the Putney Shopping Centre team for their incredible support, and to our Landlord for their fantastic assistance during Covid. Finally, we urge you to continue supporting Putney's brilliant independent businesses. They are a vital part of the community and will need your support in the coming year. Thank you for everything, Putney!”
