The message from the Community Safety Division is that residents should ensure that their premises are properly secure whenever they leave home, even if for a short time. The front door should be fitted with a good quality mortice lock in addition to any latch, or a multilock system and the back door shopuld have a similar level of protection. Never leave the keys in the lock. Glass can be protected with a security film, which should slow a burglar down, or you may prefer to fit grilles over vulnerable areas.

Try to make a record of any valuable property, taking photographs of jewellery, antiques, etc., and mark your property with your postcode and house number, which will help the police to return items to you if they are recovered after a theft.
