Arrest made in Exeter in connection with death of New Zealander Stephen Andrews

The man who died after being assaulted outside a pub in Putney has been named and an arrest has been made in relation to the incident.

Stephen Andrews, aged 46 of Old Oak Lane, Harlesden, died on Sunday 9 December after an altercation near the Dukes Head on the Lower Richmond Road.

Mr. Andrews was originally from Wellington, New Zealand and tributes have been pouring in to his Facebook page with friends expressing disbelief that someone they described as intelligent and peace loving could have died in such circumstances.

Mr. Andrews had been the lead singer of punk rock band Vas Deferens in the nineties. The group had some success in their home country during that period.

It is believed that he had been in Putney celebrating his girlfriend's birthday. The post mortem showed that the cause of death was serious head injuries.

A 28 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder this afternoon (11th December) after he attended Exeter police station. He remains in custody.

Officers from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command are investigating and an incident room has opened at Hendon under Detective Chief Inspector Matt Bonner.

DCI Bonner said: "We are still appealing for anyone who was in or around the area of the Duke's Head pub in Lower Richmond Road after midnight who may have seen or heard anything to call our incident room or Crimestoppers."
