TfL Proposes Bus Route Changes in Barnes and Putney
Services introduced after Hammersmith Bridge closure could be amended

Transport for London (TfL) has launched a public consultation on proposed changes to bus services, with implications for passengers in Barnes, Castelnau, and Putney. The proposals aim to formalise temporary arrangements introduced after the closure of Hammersmith Bridge to motor traffic in 2019.
TfL proposes to extend route 209 to take over the majority of route 533, which would be withdrawn. Route 533 was introduced as a temporary measure to maintain step-free access between Hammersmith and Barnes. The extended 209 would operate between Hammersmith and Barnes Pond via Chiswick Bridge, Lonsdale Road, and Castelnau, maintaining direct access to Hammersmith for passengers south of the river.
For Putney residents, the most direct impact would be felt through proposed changes to route 378. This route currently runs between Mortlake and Putney Bridge, and under the new plans, it would be extended to serve the London Wetland Centre. TfL is also considering changes to stopping arrangements at Putney Bridge, which could affect interchange options and journey times for local users.
Route 485, which currently links Castelnau and Wandsworth via Putney, would be rerouted to terminate at Mortlake, Avondale Road. It would no longer serve Church Road or Castelnau, potentially reducing connectivity for Putney residents who rely on this route to access Barnes or Hammersmith.
TfL states that the proposed changes are designed to match service levels with current demand and to provide greater certainty for passengers, given that Hammersmith Bridge is unlikely to reopen to motor traffic in the near future. However, the withdrawal of route 533 and the rerouting of the 485 may reduce direct options for Putney passengers travelling westward or seeking step-free access to Hammersmith.
The proposals also respond to concerns raised by Castelnau residents about high bus volumes on residential streets. TfL has worked with Richmond Council to adjust routes in a way that may ease congestion while maintaining essential connectivity.
