Scrap Cars Raise Money for Putney Charity
The Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability (RHN), to benefit from a new fundraising initiative that could raise thousands this year.
The RHN has partnered with Giveacar, a social enterprise that raises money for UK registered charities by organising the scrap or auction of people’s old cars, turning metal into money for a good cause.
Anna Wall-Budden, Fundraising Executive at RHN, said: “We saw the Giveacar initiative on a fundraising website and thought it was a fantastic idea.
We are a medical charity – not part of the NHS – and rely heavily on voluntary donations to raise £2million annually. So we’re always looking for new and exciting fundraising ideas like this one to reach our target!”
Tom Chance, the 23-year old CEO of Giveacar, came up with the idea for the scheme after spending a few months working in a car yard after graduating from Nottingham University:
Each scrap car donated through Giveacar raises on average £100 for charity. Giveacar also accepts roadworthy cars, which can be entered into a salvage auction and have the potential to raise much more.
So far over £2000 has been raised for the RHN since the charity joined the scheme earlier this year. This money has supported their work providing specialist assessment, rehabilitation treatment and care for adults with neurological conditions.
Based in Putney, the charity provides its services to people throughout the UK. One of the many people to benefit from their services is Debbie, who was involved in a car accident that left her with restricted movement down the right side of her body.
“Although my movement is still impaired, my self-confidence and sense of ability have improved so much since I’ve been coming to RHN,” says Debbie, who is now learning to use a computer again with her left hand.
The Giveacar team offer free pick-up of vehicles for donation nationwide, and all vehicles are disposed of at Authorised Treatment Facilities, which have a minimum recycling target of 85% of the weight of the car.
