More than just cakes & coffee but where a light lunch was a real treat
The first sunny day of the summer and I was taken to try "real food" at the relatively new but highly popular independant coffee shop in West Putney.
My lunch of sandwich, cake, sparkling water & strong flat white came to £11.70 - they offer a loyalty card for regulars - get your 9th coffee free if you get a card stamped and I can see that it would be very tempting to keep returning. A fan of independent coffee shops and true coffee culture so prevalent 'down under' I wish Artisan every success in SW15.
A spacious location where there were many babies, bumps and push chairs but you didn't fall over them and to be honest I wish there had been such places in Putney when I was at that stage of parenting. It is light and airy with the windows over Ravenna sliding back to enjoy the 'fresh air' and a breeze.
The staff were al incredibly welcoming and we were quickly served with our sweet potato and feta tart with a rocket salad (£5.40) and a chicken and sweet onion, rocket sandwich with paprika and garlic mayo (£4.50), which the waitress persuaded me to try toasted (she was right it was "really nice"!). My only disappointment was returning the couscous salad as it had cheese in it (although not mentioned in the description & I am allergic to it!- a common but annoying problem).
Then came the coffee & cake time! The cakes are from a small bakery in Acton - they taste and look homemade and the carrot and walnut cake (£2.90) was to die for - moist yet deceptively light and my friends frozen yogurt with berry compote (£2.70 /2.20 if no compote) was delicious and probably much better for the hips and waistline! My large skinny flat white had an extra shot and hit the spot coming with the compulsory artwork on top!
Perhaps the time has come for another readers vote on best coffee in Putney - send your recommendations & reasons for nominating to firstname.lastname@example.org by June 1st & we will then run a poll to see who serves the best coffee in SW15! You can find the winners in 2008 here.
