One of Putney’s most popular and longstanding restaurants is to serve its last customer next month.

Deepak Kapoor and his family opened Ma Goa restaurant in 1993 at 244 Upper Richmond Road. Working with his mother, Deepak initially provided authentic Goan cuisine constantly adapting depending on what was available weekly from Tooting market.

Over time they broadened their geographic reach serving everything from the Street Chaats of Bombay to the comforting dishes of South India. What ever the menu each meal was individually cooked with fresh ingredients.

Ma is still working in the kitchen and Deepak’s three children also contribute as the establishment remained a family operation as corporate chains became increasingly dominant in the area.

According to an announcement on their web site and an email to customers, the restaurant will close on 17 September.

In the message the family says, “After 30 happy years, we would like to let you know that our Ma Goa journey will be coming to an end. We will be closing our restaurant doors on the 17th of September 2022.

“Firstly, we wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to all of our loyal customers, many of whom became good friends. We will never forget your love & support. It was a genuine pleasure to cook and host you throughout the years.

“Also, thank you to our very special staff members, past and present, who formed part of our incredible MaGoa ‘team family’ - your dedication & hard-work never went unnoticed & we extend our utmost gratitude for your commitment & loyalty.

“It is now time to move on and follow new exciting paths. Please follow us on Instagram @magoalondon for announcements on future projects. In the meantime, Dee will be continuing to pursue his passion for wine at Glug Shop & Bar next door.”
