A developer has lodged an appeal against the refusal of a controversial application to convert part of Wandsworth Park into private gardens.

South heart Ltd lodged the appeal earlier this month. The application was to convert an area of 176 sqm next to 105-115 Deodar Road from Class D2 (assembly and leisure) to Class C3 (dwelling house) which would allow the applicants to convert it into a communal private garden should Wandsworth Council grant them a lease.

The application was refused by Wandsworth Council planners under delegated powers on 18 August 2017.

They said that the long term privatisation of open space contrary would be contrary to the strategic aims of the Council including where relevant to the London plan.

In August 2017 The Friends of Wandsworth Park (FoWP) had successful applied for Asset of Community Value (ACV) status for the section of the park which allowed them to delay the sale or leasing of the land should the Council decide to proceed.

An ACV in England is land or property of importance to a local community which is subject to additional protection from development under the Localism Act 2011.

Residents of Deodar Road had applied to Wandsworth Council to get a change of use of plot of land in the north western corner of the park next to the river. They argue that it had become 'a haven for undesirable activities' and was locked to prevent public access.

Friends of Wandsworth Park and the Thamesfield Councillors have been asked to comment. Cllr Ryder is unable to comment as he is a member of the planning committee.
