New York 1985. Against the backdrop of Ronald Reagan's Republican presidency and the growing awareness of a disease that threatens to wipe out a generation of young men, two couples - one straight, one gay - cling together and fall apart as the world shifts and a new era dawns. Tackling sex, politics and religion, with an added twist of magic realism, this moving, funny, brilliantly imaginative and epic 'state of the nation' play is one of the defining works of 20th-century theatre and an enduring testimony to the survival of the human spirit.

Produced only twice before in London, at the NT in 1993 and at the Lyric Hammersmith in 2007, Putney Arts Theatre presents a rare opportunity to see Tony Kushner’s landmark play of the 20th century and one of the most successful gay dramas to cross into mainstream awareness. Filmed in 2007 by HBO, with Meryl Streep and Al Pacino, Angels in America is still a piece that should be seen as it was originally intended, live on stage.

Angels in America – Part Two: Perestroika will be performed at PAT in April 2011
