This Thursday evening, 19 December from 7:30pm there is a Christmas concert at the beautiful All Saints Church, with full professional orchestra, All Saints’ Adult Choir, All Saints’ Children’s Choir (named the “Treblemakers”) and a group from another children’s primary school.
This concert follows on from the success of last year’s concert performance at All Saint’s Church of ‘The Manchester Carols’. This year we will be treated to an orchestral performance of Vaughan Williams’, ‘The First Nowell’ alongside other Christmas favourites.
The First Nowell is one of Vaughan Williams’ very final compositions. It is quintessentially English with its string textures, lyrical melodies and harmonies. It is also easy to listen to and some of the most famous English Carols are very easily identifiable within the piece.
The first performance of the First Nowell was at a Gala Concert at the Theatre Royal on December 19 in1958 and it raised some £4,000 – equivalent to almost £100,000 in today’s money – for children who had been saved from Nazi slave camps. Thursday, 19th December, 2019 will be exactly 61 years to the day since it was premiered!
The work will be narrated by Nicholas Rowe and Mari-Claire McClintock with solos by Hannah Cox and Peter Edge and accompanied by a professional orchestra. In addition to this, the joint choirs will also sing music by Chilcott, Rutter and Mathias: three English composers whose work is synonymous with Christmastime.
