Introducing John Locker, our Thamesfield Council candidate

John Locker

Following the sad death of Cllr Jim Maddan OBE, there will be a by-election in Thamesfield ward on Thursday 9 November. John Locker will be campaigning to carry on Jim’s hard work for local residents on behalf of Wandsworth Conservatives. Take a look through www.thamesfield.com for details of John’s campaigns and get in touch if you would like to be involved or offer feedback.

John Locker has lived in Wandsworth for 17 years since settling in London after University. John has a successful career in Telecoms and works with industry bodies including Ofcom, making sure consumers get the best possible choice and deals.

John is passionate about serving the community and volunteers for several local charities and organisations. He has been a school governor at a local primary school for the last 14 years.

John also has 4 years’ experience as a borough Councillor in Wandsworth. As chair of the Borough’s Transport and Strategic Planning Committee he has led on a number of key areas including:
· Introduction of 20mph on residential streets
· Pub protection
· High Street regeneration
· Lobbying for public transport improvements for Wandsworth, and
· Promoting better provision for pedestrians and cyclists as the Council’s Active Travel Champion

John says, “As a colleague and friend of Jim Maddan I know what a great champion he was for everyone in Thamesfield no matter what their political affiliation. It would be an honour to have the opportunity to continue his work and represent this wonderful community.”

Endorsement from Cllrs Rosemary Torrington and Mike Ryder: “Having worked with John over the years we know how dedicated he is to serving our community. He is always positive, super-helpful, and knows how to get things done. We are delighted to endorse John in the coming by-election. He will make a fantastic ward Councillor for Thamesfield”.

Litter-pick on Putney Embankment

We joined a group of families to pick litter on the Thames foreshore at Putney Embankment recently. It was shocking to see how much plastic there was. One of the main problems came from the plastic glasses in which the pubs serve outdoor drinks. We will working with the pubs to encourage responsible disposal of plastic glasses to prevent them ending up in the river and the water source. We were pleased to see a much cleaner foreshore afterwards and hope to repeat the litter-pick from time to time. Do email us if you’d like to join us.

20mph Speed Limits Introduced

To raise awareness of the new speed limits and ensure compliance, John has been working with ward Councillors Mike Ryder and Rosemary Torrington, and the Police. Several speed monitoring sessions have been held on local roads with the Police with warnings issued to drivers who exceeded the new speed limit.

John said, “Residents really appreciate the new speed limits and the enforcement.” John welcomed the launch of 20mph on residential roads in Putney, “I am delighted to see 20mph speed limits rolled out across our neighbourhood. This was a policy I championed as a Councillor and Chair of Wandsworth Borough Transport Committee.”

Neighbourhood Watch and mobile CCTV
Following a spate of moped enabled crime in Wandsworth Riverside Quarter, we are working with six residents’ associations and the houseboats, the Council’s Community Safety team and Vincent Chan our local police officer, to establish the area as a new Neighbourhood Watch area. If you live in WRQ and would like to be involved please join us at a public meeting on Wednesday, 4 October in the Cat’s Back at 7pm. We have also secured Council mobile CCTV for WRQ to help collect evidence and act as a deterrent.

Traffic management on Northfields and Point Pleasant
Residents raised concerns with us about articulated lorries being unable to manoeuvre around the two sharp corners by the gate into Wandsworth Park and Prospect House. Following representations from us, changes will be made to the bays to create more space for lorries and refuse trucks and hopefully this will result in less damage to cars.

Affordable Housing Day
If you live or work in the borough and are interested in finding out more about how to get on the housing ladder, the Council is running its annual affordable housing day on 19th October in the Wandsworth Civic Suite. To find out more about affordable housing, house purchase grants, right to buy or right to part right to buy go to wandsworth.gov.uk/homeownership or call 020 8871 6161.

Council funding for community and voluntary organisations
We would like to use our E-Bulletin to make residents and local groups aware that Round 6 of the Wandsworth Grant Fund is now open for applications. Grants of between £500-£10,000 are available to community and voluntary organisations to undertake not-for-profit activity for the benefit of local residents through the six thematic priorities:
• Arts and Culture
• Children and young people
• Health and wellbeing
• Environment and attractive neighbourhoods
• Achieving aspiration and potential and Citizenship and civic engagement.

Here is a link proving further information together with workshops for those interested in applying. An important element of the process is the requirement to seek the endorsement of local councillor(s), linked to where the main activity of the project will take place. We would be delighted to hear from anyone who would like to put forward a project in Thamesfield. The deadline for the current Round 6 is midnight of 16 October 2017. Please don’t leave your endorsement until the deadline so that we have sufficient time to look at your application.
