Consultant in Emergency Medicine to take on Justine Greening

Dr Neeraj Patil has been confirmed as the Parliamentary Candidate for Putney the seat currently held by Education Minister Justine Greening.

Dr Patil, 49, was born in Karnataka, South India and is married with two children. He has lived and worked in South London for the majority of his time since coming to Britain.

He was selected by the National Labour Party rather than the local constituency party. The local party say that before actively promoting the candidate to electors they wanted to meet with Dr Patil but his work commitments prevented them doing so until the weekend hence the delay in making the announcement.

Following completion of his post graduate training he has worked as a Consultant in Emergency Medicine and for the past year at Northampton General Hospital. Dr Patil has worked in the NHS for over twenty years. He has also served as a Foundation Governor for both Guy's and St Thomas Hospital & Kings College Hospital.

He has been a member of the Labour Party for fifteen years and was a councillor for Larkhall Ward in Vauxhall between 2006 and 2014. During this period 2010-2011 he was Mayor of Lambeth. He was also on the Labour party shortlist to run for Mayor in 2015, losing out on the nomination to Sadiq Khan. In 2014, Dr. Patil joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in India, saying it was the “only party that reflects the true diversity and multiculturalism of India”.

He conducted a successful campaign to get a statue of the 12th century philosopher and founder of Indian Democracy, Lord Basavanna, installed at Albert Embankment Gardens looking across to the Houses of Parliament.
