A number of changes to the road layout on Dover House Road are to be implemented later this year. The new layout aims to make the area safer for cyclists and pedestrians.

Transport for London (TfL) received a total of 35 responses to a public consultation regarding works at the junction of A205 Upper Richmond Road with Dover House Road. Following analysis of the responses received and taking into account issues that were raised during the consultation, TfL have decided to go ahead with the proposals with works to start in autumn 2016.

The proposals are:
1) Install a new traffic island on Dover House Road to control the speed of vehicles turning into the road and prevent them from cutting corners

2) Increase the size of the kerb at the entrance of Dover House Road to slow down turning vehicles and prevent the kerb from being mounted

3) Introduce green surfacing on the section of the cycle lane that crosses the junction to make it more visible to road users and alert them of potential cyclist/motorist conflict

4) Remove the loading bay located outside 393 Upper Richmond Road, this is currently in the cycle lane and when in use cyclists are forced to cycle around the bay and into the carriageway. The loading bay outside 353 Upper Richmond Road will remain

5) Widen the carriageway slightly on Dover House Road to help buses turn more easily into the road

6) Relocate zig zag road markings on A205 Upper Richmond Road opposite the entrance to Dover House Road to allow continuation of the cycle lane

In addition to the above TfL proposed to introduce parking restrictions on the south side service road near Dover House Road, this is following requests from residents and local businesses. Their studies showed that the unrestricted parking bays are being used by commuters to ‘park and ride’ to work. This is thought to be causing a loss of potential business for local shop owners as there are fewer spaces for their customers to park.

The changes proposed were:

1) The introduction of 15 echelon parking bays of which two will be disabled bays

3 ) Installation of two new cycle parking stands

The proposed parking restrictions would standardise parking on the service road which is currently only enforced on the north side. The restrictions proposed are Monday-Saturday parking permitted between the hours of 7am-7pm for a maximum of one hour (with no return within two hours)

A council spokesman said, “We’re pleased TfL has agreed to make these changes which will make it much safer for cyclists and pedestrians to negotiated this busy junction. We have also committed £70,000 to improving public space along the service road which will be funded from the tax on local development projects. Plans for this scheme are now being developed.”
