Youth Centre To Make Way For New Council Homes

Wates Construction will develop the new homes on the site of a former community centre, off Stroud Crescent, which has been reprovided elsewhere on the estate.

The scheme will consist of 11 council homes for estate residents who wish to downsize, which in turn frees up homes for other households in need, and ten self-contained supporting housing properties providing independent living for residents with physical and learning disabilities.

It is thought to be one of the only supported living schemes being built in London by a council, and is expected to be complete from late 2018.

The Putney Vale Residents Association said, “Since the closure of the Stag House building in 2012 the residents association of Putney Vale has been working with the council regarding any future development of the site. The council has now approved the building of 21 new extra care flats of which 11 will be reserved for the elderly tenants on the estate; following the appointment of Wates as the contractor for the development the residents association looks forward to working together as part of Wates’ Customer Engagement Working Group.”

The development is part of a supported housing programme, running since 2009, which has seen four such developments built so far in Wandsworth. This means that the council can ensure more independent living options for vulnerable residents and provide local alternatives as an option instead of placements in residential care facilities that may be outside of the borough.

Cllr Clare Salier, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “Wandsworth is one of only a few authorities which is building its own supported housing for vulnerable residents. In addition, this scheme is important because it enables other local households to downsize, freeing up more council housing for people.”
