Lucie Monbillard from seanhanna in Putney, has been shortlisted for the title of Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year at HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards 2019, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional. The recognition comes after her boundary-pushing hairstyling captivated the imagination of more than 100 industry judges. Lucie is one of just six specialist avant garde hairdressers from across the entire United Kingdom to be chosen for this accolade. In 2015 Lucie won the award and a finalist in 2017.

Having a highly artistic, and sometimes fantastical nature, avant garde hairstyling is at the forefront of cutting and colouring, often characterised by extreme sculptural design. Lucie’s experimental collection of images stood out for its highly imaginative techniques, securing her reputation as one of the country’s leading creative stylists. In the hope of taking home the title, Lucie will be required to submit a further four images of her artistic work for the second round of judging in September, before the awards ceremony in November.

On her nomination, Lucie says: “I had so much fun creating this collection of images, avant garde really allows me to let my imagination run wild! It’s essential in hairdressing to keep innovating, and this style of working keeps my creative flow constantly evolving. It’s beautiful to turn radical, unorthodox hair into reality, and it’s a delight to be recognised.”

Commenting on the announcement, Jayne Lewis-Orr, executive director of HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards said; “To be named as a finalist in the Avant Garde Hairdresser of Year category highlights just how exceptional Lucie is. Her hairstyling demonstrated fantastic skill and vision, and rightly gives her the acknowledgement as one of UK’s best hairdressers.”

“Britain has long had a world-class reputation for trend-setting in the hairdressing industry, and Lucie proves that this renowned creativity and excellence are still at the heart of the British hair scene. Her exceptional work epitomises this tradition of brilliant innovation.”

HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional, celebrates the very best of British hairdressing, recognising and rewarding the creative talents of individuals and teams who make the industry so vibrant. There are over 287,000 people working within the hairdressing, barbering and beauty industries in the UK, with salons often making up the backbone of the high street and contributing over £7bn to the UK economy each year.

“Sponsoring HJ's British Hairdressing Awards is an enormous privilege, and we at Schwarzkopf Professional are delighted that we can partner with HJ in supporting and recognising the very best hairdressing talent across the UK. Hairdressing is an industry of endless enthusiasm and creativity and nowhere is this more evident than in the entries for these awards. Receiving a finalist place is a phenomenal feat and we extend our biggest congratulations to all of the finalists, wishing them all the luck for the awards ceremony," says Julian Crane, Schwarzkopf Professional General Manager, UK and Ireland.

HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards have launched the careers of a host of household names: from John Frieda and Nicky Clarke to TONI&GUY creative director Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck, as well as TV favourites Lisa Shepherd and Andrew Barton.
