Putney Rotary Club is working in partnership with the Wandsworth Music Services, the youth music department of Wandsworth Council to provide a platform for local youth to
showcase their musical talent.

Young musicians competed in a local round earlier this year
and the winners are put forward into the regional and national Rotary Young Musician competition.

The three winners from Wandsworth were entered into the “all London” regional final that took place in the school hall of Nower Hill High School, Pinner on Saturday 16 March.

The senior competition was jointly won by Scott of Ibstock Place school, on piano, and Freya of Graveney School, on alto saxophone.

Junior competition winner Alexandre (Thomas’s Battersea School)

The junior competition was won by Alexandre of Thomas’s Battersea School on oboe, playing pieces by Handel and John Field.

The entrants from Wandsworth beat off the talented competition and will now all move forward to the next, South East England, round - in Cambridge on 7 April.

Adjudicators were Tim Smith, Victoria Simmons and Simon Wookey, all well known in local music circles. Judging was on a number of factors including melodic accuracy, tone, tempo and character. The adjudicators gave detailed feedback after the performances.

The event was presented by Rotary in London Youth Team Leader Toni Finkel, of the Rotary Club of Edgware & Stanmore. Putney Rotary Club President Tony Chase said: "We’re delighted with achievements of our local young musicians. Rotary provides a range of opportunities for young people - including competitions for music, public speaker and essay writing - and the chance to live and study abroad as a Rotary Youth Exchange student. ”
