When GB cox Phelan Hill flew back from Rio with his gold medal he had a surprise welcome in his Putney street, the trees were had gold ribbons and his gate was painted gold.

Whilst his wife and a friend repainted the front gate to reflect his achievement the residents of his East Putney street tied golden ribbons on all the trees down the street.

Tweeting:
'Loved my time @Rio2016_en, back in @putneysw15 now and what a great surprise on my street! A golden gate & ribbons!'

An olympic medal is nothing new to Phelan having coxed the GB Men's eight at London 2012 where they achieved a bronze medal.

When asked about his favourite haunts in Putney, Phelan said told the website that his favourite coffee shop is Ground Coffee Society (though everyone knows it as Grind) on the Lower Richmond Road. "
If I'm going for a pint i’d probably say Queen Adelaide or Prince of Wales and if I'm going out for meal then Bibo though I do like a cheeky Nando’s every now and again!".
